Cryptocoryne striolata 'Tigerstripes' Care Guide

Cryptocoryne striolata 'Tigerstripes' is a Bornean crypt with dark leaves marked by lighter cross-bands; it is difficult to grow and needs stable, clean water.

Overview

Cryptocoryne striolata is a species of the genus Cryptocoryne, described by Engler and widespread on Borneo. The 'Tigerstripes' form is selected for dark green leaves marked with lighter cross-bands resembling tiger stripes. The species is highly variable in leaf appearance and is considered very difficult to keep in the aquarium.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Araceae
  • Order: Alismatales
  • Genus: Cryptocoryne
  • Scientific name: Cryptocoryne striolata 'Tigerstripes'
  • Author of species: Engler

Habitat

The species is widespread on Borneo, with collections from Sarawak; its full range is incompletely documented because the southern and eastern parts of the island are less surveyed. Leaf form varies considerably in culture, with some plants showing dark, almost black bullate leaves and others showing distinct striping or even green leaves depending on conditions.

Tank requirements

  • Temperature: 22-27 °C (72-81 °F)
  • pH: 5.5-7.0
  • GH: 2-10 °dGH
  • Lighting: medium
  • CO2: not required
  • Growth rate: slow
  • Maximum height: about 25 cm
  • Placement: midground

Planting and care

Cryptocoryne striolata is reported to be nearly impossible to grow well in an aquarium and is challenging even in emersed culture over the long term. It requires stable parameters, clean water and a nutrient-rich substrate, and it reacts strongly to abrupt changes; crypt melt is likely after planting or relocation. Because of its sensitivity it is regarded as a plant for experienced keepers and collectors.

Propagation

Propagation is by runners. The plant can form daughter plants on underground runners, but its slow growth and sensitivity mean propagation is slow and most reliable under stable, well-established conditions.
