How to Propagate Cryptocoryne balansae
Cryptocoryne balansae multiplies by runners and rhizome division, sending up new rosettes. Learn to separate daughter plants and handle crypt melt.
Overview
Cryptocoryne balansae (Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae) is a tall background rosette crypt with long, narrow leaves featuring a distinctive crinkly edge, growing roughly 18-58 cm long. It comes from the limestone mountains of Southern Thailand, where the water can be very hard, so it tolerates hard water well. It is not very demanding but appreciates a nutritious substrate and good light.
Propagation Method (Runners / Division)
The mother plant pushes runners through the substrate, and new rosettes (daughter plants) sprout from the rhizome along them. To propagate, you wait for daughter plants to establish their own roots, then divide them from the parent rhizome and replant. Crypts are root feeders, so each division needs a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs to thrive.
Step-by-Step
- Let the parent plant grow until it sends out runners and daughter rosettes appear nearby.
- Wait until each daughter rosette has its own healthy roots before separating it.
- Gently lift the rhizome and cut or pull apart the daughter plant from the parent.
- Replant the division burying the roots while keeping the crown above the substrate so it does not rot.
- Add root tabs or use a nutrient-rich substrate, and avoid moving the plant again once placed.
Conditions for Healthy Growth
Cryptocoryne balansae is hardy and tolerant of a wide range of parameters, including hard water and low light, though it grows best with good light and a nutritious substrate. Keep conditions stable: crypts are very sensitive to major changes in their water.
Maintenance
Remove clearly melted or yellowing leaves to prevent nitrogen spikes and algae. Thin dense stands by dividing established daughter plants and replanting them elsewhere. Keep root nutrition topped up with tabs and avoid unnecessary disturbance once the plant is settled.
Common Challenges
- Crypt melt after planting or relocation: keep conditions stable and wait 3-4 weeks for recovery; do not discard plants with healthy roots.
- Crown rot: plant with the crown above the substrate, burying only the roots.
- Slow propagation: runners and daughter rosettes take time, so be patient before dividing.
