Breeding Corydoras kanei
Breeding Corydoras kanei: sexing, cooler water-change trigger, egg deposition on glass and mops, and fry rearing over sand.
Overview
Corydoras kanei (also placed in the genus Hoplisoma) is a callichthyid catfish native to the Rio Negro basin, possibly restricted to the affluent Rio Branco drainage in Roraima state, Brazil. Seriously Fish gives a maximum standard length of 40-50 mm, and FishBase records around 3.8 cm SL.
Sexing
Females tend to grow larger, and sexually mature individuals are noticeably broader and deeper-bodied than males.
Conditioning
Keep two or more males per female if possible and condition the group thoroughly before attempting to spawn them.
Breeding Setup
Offer the aquarium glass, fine-leaved vegetation, or sunken spawning mops as deposition sites; mops are especially recommended for easy egg removal. Fry perform better over a thin sand layer than in a bare tank.
Spawning Behaviour & Trigger
Induce spawning by performing a large 50-70% water change with cooler water while increasing oxygenation and flow. Repeat daily until the fish spawn.
Egg & Fry Care
Eggs are placed on the glass, among fine-leaved plants, or within spawning mops. Incubation is normally 3-4 days, and once fry have absorbed their yolk sacs they accept small live foods such as microworm and Artemia nauplii. Maintain excellent water quality.
Common Challenges
Fry depend on consistently high water quality; rearing them over a thin sand layer is reported to reduce losses compared with a bare base.
