Convict Cichlid care guide

Convict Cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) — minimum tank 150 L, temperature 24-28 °C, pH 6.5-8.

Overview

The Convict Cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) is a small but pugnacious Central American cichlid named for the bold vertical black bars on a pale grey body. Females develop golden-orange ventral colour when in breeding condition; pink and leucistic captive lines are also common.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Cichlidae
  • Genus: Amatitlania
  • Scientific name: Amatitlania nigrofasciata
  • Common synonyms: Zebra Cichlid

Habitat

Native to streams and lakes of the Pacific slope of Central America, from Guatemala to Costa Rica and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Inhabits warm, well-oxygenated rocky waters with abundant cover and structure.

Tank requirements

  • Minimum tank volume: 150 L (39.6 US gal)
  • Adult size: 10-15 cm
  • Temperature: 24-28 °C (75-82 °F)
  • pH: 6.5-8
  • GH: 5-20 °dGH
  • Water flow: moderate
  • Lifespan: 8-10 years

Diet

An omnivore in the wild that feeds on insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and plant debris. In aquaria it accepts quality cichlid pellets, frozen and live foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped earthworm) and vegetable matter.

Compatibility

Highly territorial despite its modest size; will harass and damage any tank mate that ventures too close, especially when paired and spawning. Best kept singly, as a bonded pair in a dedicated tank, or in a very large set-up with other robust Central American cichlids; not suitable for community tanks.

Breeding

A substrate spawner and one of the most prolific aquarium cichlids. Pairs spawn on a flat rock, in a cave or pit and both parents fiercely guard eggs and fry. Successful pair-bonding usually produces a clutch every few weeks if fry are removed.

Conservation status

IUCN Red List: Least Concern. Populations are widespread in the native range and feral populations have established in many warm regions worldwide where the species is considered invasive.
