Heater with External Controller: A Guide
An external controller monitors temperature with a separate probe and cuts power if the heater fails, adding a fail-safe layer.
Overview
A heater with an external controller pairs a heating element with a separate digital temperature controller and probe. The controller governs the heater independently, giving tighter temperature control and a fail-safe shutoff. It is used where temperature swings would be dangerous, such as sensitive species and reef systems.
How it works
The heating element plugs into the controller, which itself plugs into the wall. The controller has its own probe placed in the tank and a switchable power outlet. A single-stage controller turns the heater on when the water drops below the set point and off once it reaches the target, using its independent reading rather than the heater's built-in thermostat.
Why it adds safety
A heater is among the most likely pieces of equipment to fail in a way that threatens livestock, either stuck on and overheating the tank, or failing off and letting it cool. An external controller acts as an independent overseer: it monitors temperature with its own probe and cuts power to the heater if readings exceed safe thresholds.
Benefits
- Independent temperature monitoring via a separate probe
- Power is cut to the heater if temperature exceeds a safe threshold
- Real-time readings taken from the display tank
- Many models offer alarms or notifications when temperature drifts
Best practices
Placing the controller probe in the display tank gives a more accurate reading than relying on the heater's internal sensor. A secondary heater set to a lower threshold and an independent thermometer add further protection. The heater must stay fully submerged while running.
Maintenance
After a water change, the heater is allowed to acclimate before being powered on, and a pause is observed before handling it after switch-off. The controller probe is kept clean and securely positioned, and its set point is checked against an independent thermometer so the displayed temperature can be trusted.
