Checker Barb Breeding Guide
How to breed Oliotius oligolepis: sexing, conditioning, a dim spawning tank and rearing fry that become free-swimming about a day after hatching.
Overview
Oliotius oligolepis is a peaceful cyprinid with iridescent, checkerboard-patterned scales. It is an egg-scattering species exhibiting no parental care that spawns regularly when in good condition.
Sexing
Adult males are noticeably smaller, slimmer and more colourful than females, which are fuller-bodied.
Conditioning
The breeding group can be conditioned together in the main aquarium before being transferred to the spawning setup.
Breeding Setup
Use a dimly lit tank with mature, slightly acidic to neutral water and a temperature towards the upper end of the maintenance range of 18-25 °C. Cover the base with mesh, plastic grass matting, glass marbles or fine-leaved plants such as Taxiphyllum or spawning mops so eggs fall out of reach, and add an air-powered sponge filter or air stone.
Spawning Behavior & Trigger
Introduce one or two pairs once the females are gravid; spawning normally occurs the following morning. Alternatively, spawn a group of about six specimens of each sex in a larger tank.
Egg & Fry Care
As the species gives no parental care, remove the adults once spawning ends. Eggs hatch in 24-48 hours and the fry become free-swimming around 24 hours later. Offer infusoria-grade food for the first few days until they are large enough to accept microworm, Artemia nauplii or similar.
