Propagating Bucephalandra 'Biblis': Rhizome Division
A practical guide to propagating the narrow-leaved Bucephalandra 'Biblis' by rhizome division, mounting pieces to hardscape and managing the typical transition melt.
Overview
Bucephalandra is a genus in the family Araceae, endemic to Borneo, where the rheophytic plants form dense mats on stones and rocks in streams and rivers. 'Biblis' is a distinctive cultivar with elongated, narrow leaves carrying a metallic sheen — a textural contrast to broad-leaved Buce varieties.
Like all Bucephalandra, 'Biblis' is a slow-growing epiphyte that attaches to hardscape rather than rooting in soil, so the home grower multiplies it by dividing the rhizome.
Propagation Method (Rhizome Division)
Propagation works from the creeping, rooting rhizome. Farm-grown Buce frequently arrives as large mats or clumps; separating a clump into individual plants gives each one better access to flow and light and encourages faster, healthier growth.
Every division must keep a section of rhizome with leaves and roots. That piece is then tied or glued to rock or wood, or set on the substrate — never buried.
Step-by-Step
- Select a healthy mat or clump with multiple leaves and roots.
- Separate it into pieces, each retaining a length of rhizome with its own leaves and roots.
- Attach each piece to rock or wood with thread, or glue the roots with a little aquarium glue.
- Leave the rhizome exposed to the water; never coat it in glue or substrate.
- Position the divisions in stable, mature water and allow time to attach and grow on.
Conditions for Healthy Growth
'Biblis' tolerates a wide light range, from shaded spots to full light, and survives without CO2. Cool, clean water keeps stress and melt low, although the plant also copes with warmer, discus-range temperatures.
- Lighting: low to moderate; shade tolerant.
- Temperature: cooler, stable water minimises melt.
- CO2: not required.
- Thrives in tanks with a mature biological system.
Maintenance
Maintenance is light given the slow growth: maintain clean, stable water and remove melted or deteriorating leaves so the rhizome can produce new ones. Re-divide only after a clump has bulked up.
Common Challenges
Melting dominates the troubleshooting list. 'Biblis' melts readily in uncycled new tanks and after transport or moves between tanks with different parameters. Cool, clean, stable conditions let the rhizome regrow even when the first leaves are lost.
