Borneo Sucker Loach Care Guide
Pseudogastromyzon are small flat hillstream loaches with sucker-like undersides that graze algae in fast Chinese streams and need strong flow.
Overview
Pseudogastromyzon is a genus of small, flattened hillstream loaches whose broad, fused pectoral and pelvic fins form a sucker-like underside used to grip rocks. They are algae-grazing fish of fast-flowing rivers, often sold under the trade name Borneo sucker loach.
Taxonomy
- Family: Balitoridae
- Genus: Pseudogastromyzon
- Scientific name: Pseudogastromyzon (genus)
Habitat
Members of the genus are found in fast-flowing streams and rivers in China. These are highly oxygenated, rocky watercourses where biofilm and benthic algae cover submerged stones, providing both food and grazing surface for the loaches.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 80 L
- Temperature: 18-24 °C (64-75 °F)
- pH: 7.0-8.0
- GH: 8-18 °dGH
- Water flow: high, well-oxygenated
- Group size: 3 or more individuals
- Lifespan: 5-8 years
Diet
These loaches are herbivores that graze biofilm and benthic algae from rock surfaces. A mature aquarium with algae-covered hardscape is important; algae wafers and blanched vegetables can supplement the diet, with high-protein foods kept to a minimum.
Compatibility
They are peaceful and best kept in a group over rocky substrate. Suitable companions are other hillstream loaches and fish adapted to fast, oxygen-rich water; slow-water species should be avoided.
