Habitat
A selectively bred short-bodied form of the molly (Poecilia sphenops), not found in the wild. The wild-type molly ranges across fresh, brackish and coastal waters from Mexico to Colombia and is a livebearer tolerant of hard, alkaline conditions. The shortened spine of the balloon form is a deliberate deformity.
