Propagating Bacopa Compacta

How to propagate Bacopa Compacta, the short-internode form of Bacopa caroliniana, by cuttings: top the stem, strip lower leaves, replant, and trigger side shoots.

Overview

Bacopa Compacta is a selected, short-internode form of Bacopa caroliniana, a perennial creeping herb whose thick, succulent leaves smell of lemon when crushed. The leaves are arranged oppositely along the stem and turn bronze or reddish under strong light. As a cultivar it carries the same growth habit as the parent species and is propagated identically — by stem cuttings.

Propagation Method (Cuttings)

Bacopa caroliniana is propagated through cuttings. You cut a healthy length of stem, remove the lowest leaves, and replant the cutting in the substrate, where it develops new roots. The original base remains in the tank and pushes out lateral side shoots, so a single plant steadily multiplies.

Step-by-Step

  1. Choose a healthy stem with firm, well-coloured leaves.
  2. Cut the top 5–10 cm just below a leaf node using clean scissors.
  3. Strip the leaves from the lowest 2–3 cm so they will not rot in the substrate.
  4. Plant the bare lower stem 2–3 cm deep, spacing cuttings so each has room to root.
  5. Leave the trimmed base in place — it will branch into new side shoots from the nodes.

Conditions for Healthy Growth

In the aquarium Bacopa caroliniana needs good lighting to grow strongly but will survive even fairly low light, which makes Compacta forgiving in both low-tech and high-tech tanks. It prefers a nutrient-rich environment. Stronger light brings out the bronze to reddish tones in the leaves; in dimmer setups the plant stays green and grows more upright.

Trimming & Maintenance

Trim roughly every two weeks. Top the tallest stems, replant the tips, and let the bases branch — repeated topping builds a dense midground bush. Bacopa can also grow emersed, where leaves take on a waxy appearance; submersed growth is the norm in display tanks.
