Overview
Aulonocranus dewindti is a cichlid of the family Cichlidae and the only known member of its genus. It is endemic to the Lake Tanganyika basin and feeds on plankton over sandy substrates, where it can occur in large schools. It reaches a total length of about 12 cm.

Habitat
The species occurs in the Lake Tanganyika basin and associated rivers, recorded from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. It lives over sandy substrates and feeds in the open water above them, often gathering in large schools.

Diet
Aulonocranus dewindti is a planktivore feeding on plankton over sandy bottoms. In the aquarium a varied diet of small frozen foods and prepared rations suits its open-water, plankton-picking habits.
Compatibility
This peaceful, bottom-oriented species does best in groups on a sandy substrate. Suitable tankmates include Cyprichromis, Cyphotilapia and Xenotilapia, while aggressive Mbuna and Tropheus should be avoided.
Breeding
Aulonocranus dewindti is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female broods the eggs and fry in her mouth, carrying larvae up to about 1.63 cm before release.
