Apistogramma Trifasciata care guide
Apistogramma Trifasciata (Apistogramma trifasciata) — minimum tank 60 L, temperature 23-28 °C, pH 5-7.
Overview
The Three-striped Apistogramma (Apistogramma trifasciata) is a dwarf cichlid from southern South America. Mature males develop extended dorsal-fin rays, a long ventral filament and a body marked with three distinct dark stripes — one mid-lateral, one on the lower flank and a third along the belly. Adults reach about 6 cm.
Taxonomy
- Family: Cichlidae
- Genus: Apistogramma
- Scientific name: Apistogramma trifasciata
- Common synonyms: Three-Stripe Apisto, Blue Apistogramma
Habitat
Native to soft, slow blackwater and clearwater tributaries of the Paraguay and lower Amazon river systems in southern South America. The species occupies leaf-litter beds in shallow margins with overhanging vegetation.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 60 L (15.9 US gal)
- Adult size: 4-6 cm
- Temperature: 23-28 °C (73-82 °F)
- pH: 5-7
- GH: 1-10 °dGH
- Water flow: low
- Lifespan: 3-5 years
Diet
A micro-carnivore that takes small invertebrates and crustaceans amongst leaf litter. In aquaria it accepts frozen and live foods — bloodworm, daphnia, baby brine shrimp and microworms — and small cichlid pellets. Variety is needed to keep colour and condition.
Compatibility
Peaceful but territorial in breeding condition; suitable for soft-water community tanks with small tetras, pencilfish and Corydoras. One male with two or three females per 60+ L works well; multiple males require enough cover to establish separate territories.
Breeding
A polygamous cave spawner. Females lay eggs inside small caves or under leaves and guard the brood fiercely while the male defends the wider territory. Fry hatch after two to three days and are led by the female to feeding spots.
Conservation status
IUCN Red List: not formally assessed; the species is widespread across its range and most aquarium-trade specimens are tank-bred.
