Pebas Apisto (Apistogramma sp. "Pebas") Care Guide
Apistogramma sp. "Pebas" is an undescribed Peruvian dwarf cichlid from the Pebas region, kept under a trade designation.
Overview
Apistogramma sp. "Pebas" is an undescribed dwarf cichlid kept in the aquarium hobby under a trade designation linked to the Pebas region of eastern Peru. It has not received a formal scientific name, so verifiable species-level data are limited; the account below relies on documented biology of the genus Apistogramma.
Taxonomy
- Family: Cichlidae
- Genus: Apistogramma
- Scientific name: Apistogramma sp. "Pebas" (undescribed)
- Status: not yet formally described
Habitat
As an Apistogramma, this form belongs to a genus restricted to lowland tropical South America east of the Andes. Members typically inhabit sheltered, shallow margins of streams, rivers and lakes where leaf litter collects and water movement is low.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 80 L
- Temperature: 25-29 °C (77-84 °F)
- pH: 4.5-6.5
- GH: 1-4 °dGH
- Lifespan: 3-5 years
A soft sandy substrate with wood, roots and dried leaf litter forming shaded caves suits the genus. Wild Apistogramma often require very soft, acidic water.
Diet
Apistogramma are primarily carnivorous and feed mostly on benthic invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae in nature. In the aquarium they accept small live and frozen foods such as Artemia and Daphnia.
Compatibility
A bottom-dwelling, territorial dwarf cichlid best kept with small, peaceful mid- and upper-water fish such as tetras. Multiple Apistogramma males and larger or aggressive cichlids should be avoided in confined tanks.
Breeding
Apistogramma are cave spawners. Eggs are typically deposited in a crevice or cave and tended by the female, while the male defends the territory; some species form harems and others monogamous pairs.
