Anubias barteri var. nana 'Mini Pinto' Care Guide

Anubias barteri var. nana 'Mini Pinto' is a tiny variegated cultivar of the African epiphyte Anubias nana, a very slow-growing nano rhizome plant.

Overview

Anubias barteri var. nana 'Mini Pinto' is a miniature variegated cultivar derived from Anubias barteri var. nana, the smallest member of the species, in the family Araceae. It is a very small epiphyte grown attached to wood or rock, with white-marbled leaves and very slow growth.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Araceae
  • Genus: Anubias
  • Scientific name: Anubias barteri var. nana 'Mini Pinto'
  • Type: variegated nano cultivar of A. barteri var. nana

Habitat

The parent species Anubias barteri occurs in south-eastern Nigeria, Cameroon and on Bioko. Within the genus, plants grow primarily in rivers and streams and may also be found in marshes, favouring shaded aquatic environments. A. barteri var. nana is recognised as the smallest variety. As a cultivar, 'Mini Pinto' has no wild range.

Tank requirements

  • Temperature: 22-28 °C (72-82 °F)
  • pH: 6.0-7.5
  • GH: 3-12 °dGH
  • Lighting: medium
  • CO2: not required
  • Maximum height: about 8 cm
  • Placement: nano epiphyte (wood, rock)

Growth and placement

Anubias generally prefer subdued lighting, with stronger light promoting faster, more compact growth. Its small size and reduced green tissue from variegation make 'Mini Pinto' one of the slowest-growing anubias, well suited to nano layouts. The rhizome must stay above the substrate, attached to wood or rock, since a buried rhizome may rot.

Propagation

Propagation is by dividing the rhizome or separating side shoots; given the small size, each division should still retain several leaves and a section of rhizome before re-attachment.
