Anubias barteri 'Coffee Broad' Care Guide
Anubias barteri 'Coffee Broad' is a bullate-leaved coffee Anubias variant; a slow, robust epiphyte for shaded, low-light driftwood arrangements.
Overview
Anubias barteri 'Coffee Broad' is a variant of the coffee Anubias with broader, strongly bullate (arched between the veins) leaves and a dark olive-green color. Its leaves resemble those of the coffee shrub, with new leaves emerging orange-brown and turning dark green. It is a robust, very slowly growing epiphyte for shaded driftwood arrangements.
Taxonomy
- Family: Araceae
- Genus: Anubias
- Scientific name: Anubias barteri 'Coffee Broad'
Habitat
The genus Anubias is native to tropical central and western Africa, growing in rivers, streams and marshes in shaded conditions, usually attached to rocks or bogwood. The coffee Anubias is a cultivated variety of A. barteri grown worldwide in aquariums.
Growth requirements
- Light: low (low to moderate; partial shade preferred)
- CO2: not required, though it can promote faster growth
- Temperature: 22-28 °C (72-82 °F)
- pH: 6.0-7.8
- GH: 3-14 °dGH
- Growth rate: slow
- Maximum height: about 20 cm
Placement
It is used in the midground attached to hardscape, favoring gentle flow and partially shaded positions, such as under taller plants, since excessively bright light can trigger algae on its broad leaves. The rhizome must not be buried; it is tied to rocks or driftwood with thread until its roots attach.
Propagation
Propagation is by rhizome division: a section of rhizome with leaves is cut off and re-attached to hardscape.
