Propagating Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini': Cuttings and Topping

How to propagate Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini', the compact red dwarf cultivar, by topping and replanting cuttings while keeping its vivid color with strong light, CO2 and iron.

Overview

Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini' is a compact dwarf cultivar of Alternanthera reineckii, a species in the family Amaranthaceae known as water hedge and native to South America, where it grows in submerged and semi-aquatic habitats. Compared with the parent, 'Mini' stays much shorter and denser, reaching roughly 5-10 cm, and careful trimming lets it form a dense red-violet carpet. It propagates exactly like its parent: by cuttings and topping.

Propagation Method

Propagation is by stem cuttings, often combined with topping. You cut a top section of 5-10 cm, strip the lowest leaves, and replant it as a new plant. Because 'Mini' is a low, dense grower, you also split and replant established clumps to spread it across a foreground. Commercially it is grown from tissue culture, but in the tank cuttings are the practical route.

Step-by-Step

  1. Select a strong, well-colored top and cut 5-10 cm with clean scissors.
  2. Remove leaves from the lowest 2-3 cm to expose a node.
  3. Replant each cutting separately in nutrient-rich substrate, leaving small gaps.
  4. To split a clump, lift it gently and divide it into rooted portions.
  5. Keep light and CO2 high so the replants color up and fill in densely.

Conditions for Healthy Growth

This is an intermediate cultivar whose growth is slower than the standard form. High light intensity together with CO2 addition improves growth and overall appearance, and the plant develops its red-violet hues best under strong light; adequate iron in the fertilizer routine supports that coloration. Tropica rates it at medium light and medium CO2 as a practical minimum, with warm, soft to moderately hard water and a nutrient-rich substrate.

Trimming & Maintenance

By careful trimming it is possible to create a dense, red-violet carpet of about 5-10 cm height. Top the stems regularly to force branching and to harvest cuttings, and replant the trimmings into thin spots. Removing shaded lower leaves keeps the stand compact and richly colored.
